Trauma Counselling and Psychotherapy for Children, Young People and their Family
Trauma can occur when the child or young person witnesses or has been through an accident, sexual abuse, violence, emotional abuse, bullying, a fight, or any other event that is perceived to harm him or her self.
Josephine uses Trauma-focused Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (TF-CBT) which is a child-focused and family-focused treatment plan. It helps the child learn about feelings and thoughts and how some bad things that happen causes bad feelings and thoughts. It also teaches the child to learn how to self-regulate. The parents are taught parenting skills to help learn how to manage the child's behaviour as usually, after trauma the child starts to misbehave. Usually behaviour problems is a way for the child to communicate an unconscious need or to replay the trauma while having control over the situation. Parents are also taught stress management skills and gets to hear the child's trauma story, with the child's permission.
Often childhood trauma can be traumatic for the parent/s, so therefore Josephine will ensure that the parent/s emotions are stable to hear the traumatic story. If, unstable it may be best for parents to receive their own therapy elsewhere.
TF-CBT is useful for preschoolers and upwards.
