Stress, Depression and Anxiety in Children and Young People

When children and young people are stressed they can feel anxious and become depressed.

Stress can occur when the child or young person is worried about something, overwhelmed and experience difficult relationships with friends and family.

Anxiety can occur when the child or young person feels worried about the future.  It may be worries about friendships, worries about studies, worries about parents fighting or splitting up or worried about family challenges.

When stress and anxiety is not managed well, it can lead to depression.  The child or young person with depression can lack interest in things or people, feel sad all the time, too tired or can't sleep, or become negative.

Stress, anxiety and depression in children and young people can be managed through cognitive behaviour therapy, mindfulness, emotion focused therapy or other helpful modalities that will give the child or young person a safe space to talk, validate their experience and find healthier ways of coping and thinking as well as self-regulating.
