Grief and Loss can cause a feeling of confusion and result in loneliness and depression. It can also cause feelings of sadness from the loss and guilt and anger as many people feel that they did not spend enough time with their loved ones and wish they had done more.
Emotions of grief and loss usually spill into the workplace, cause disengagement with activities, friends and family and cause extreme sadness. Grief can be disenfranchised meaning loss of job, other family member such as cousin or in-laws or an item. Losing a pet can also cause sadness and grief.
Psychology sessions can help those experiencing grief and loss by:
Accepting the reality of the loss
Experiencing the pain and grief
Adjusting to the new situation
Withdrawing emotional energy from the loss and to put it into a new relationship or situation
Integrating the loss
Sessions will give clients a safe container to process emotions so they can heal from the situation and give them the ability to increase their energy, function effectively and maintain a positive lifestyle while developing new healthy attachments.
Cognitive Behaviour therapy and EMDR are therapies that can process grief. Healing from grief does not mean you no longer love the person, item or pet you lost but that you are coping better. While grieving never ends as it just means you love what has been lost but the intensity of the emotions will be reduced so you can cope with the grief and grieving will no longer impact on your life.
